Cleaning Service vs. Independent Cleaner

Do you ever wonder if there is a difference between a cleaning service and an independent cleaner? Do you find yourself saying “its just cleaning, why does it matter?” Although an independent cleaner may have amazing cleaning skills, there are a few things to consider before deciding which is right for you.

  1. Liability Insurance

Both a cleaning service and an independent cleaner try hard to avoid accidents, but they happen! A big difference between the two (service vs. independent) is liability insurance. Cleaning services are typically insured and bonded, which means the damage will be covered. Whereas an independent cleaner doesn’t usually carry liability insurance. Which means they may not be able to cover the expenses, and you cannot hold them legally responsible for expenses.

2. Coverage for Team Members

Cleaning services carry coverage for their team members. In the unfortunate event of an injury, the cleaning service will be responsible for covering medical expenses through workman’s compensation. Independent cleaners do not usually carry workman’s compensation coverage, which means the homeowner may be held responsible for an injury in their home.

3. Tax liability

Employing a domestic worker has both state and federal tax liabilities. The wage threshold for both is relatively low, so avoiding to pay these taxes could lead to penalties. Contracting with a cleaning service, means the business owner is now responsible for complying with laws.

4. Properly Trained Staff

A cleaning service should be offering consistent and high quality training to team members. It is important to stay up to date on techniques and to follow health and safety guidelines to ensure everyone is safe. An independent cleaner may be a great cleaner, but not have access to up to date techniques which could result in damaging surfaces.

5. Accountability

Most independent cleaners are wonderful, but we all heard of stories of no-show cleaners that avoid their phones. You may get frustrated, but there is no accountability. A cleaning service on the other hand usually has a pool of team members. If someone is sick, typically another team member can step in and cover a cleaning.
